ITS Introductory Lecture Date : 21 November 2024 (Thursday) Time: 10:00am - 12:00nn Venue: CVA112, 1/F, Lee Shau Kee Communication and Visual Arts Building Lecture Title: Brain and AI: Machine Learning from and in Neuroscience Speaker: Prof. Changsong ZHOU, Chair Professor, Department of Physics Abstract: Biological neural networks have inspired artificial neural networks (ANNs) in machine learning. However, biological neural networks in the brain, which can be treated as trained networks by evolution and learning to support human natural intelligence, is far more complex in network connectivity structure and activity patterns. Meanwhile, ANNs and machine learning are increasingly used in neuroscience studies. In many studies, they are used as powerful techniques for data analysis. More interestingly, ANNs provide a new approach to study the computational principles underlying complex behaviors. This talk will give a brief overview of structural and dynamical complexity in brain networks and the intricate relationship to cognitive abilities and human intelligence and then summarize machine learning in neuroscience for complex data analysis or computational principle exploration. Hopefully such a summary will contribute to inspire the interests in developing brain-inspired machine learning and AI systems capitalizing on complexity in network architecture and dynamics.
